Educating citizens

Citizen science is a central component of the MetaSUB mission. This not only includes informing and educating the interested public about research on the environmental microbiome, but also to include volunteers for data collection.

Over the past years members of the MetaSUB Europe society have regularly organized and participated in the collection of environmental microbiome samples during the annual Global City Sampling Day. Over the whole course of the project, more than 10'000 samples have been collected in over 100 cities on all continents. Each sampling involves the coordination with local authorities and, if possible, involves the contributions from citizen scientists.

In addition to events such as Global City Sampling Day, MetaSUB researchers regularly participate in national and international conferences to present their most recent findings and methodological developments.
